Despite the ever-present threat of showers, the annual Riccall Carnival went splendidly over the weekend of the 22-24 June. Its theme this year was ‘100 Years of Scouting’. A scouting review at the Regen Centre on the Friday evening started the weekend off, with contributions from the Selebian Singers, the Selby Scout Band, Riccallish Allsorts and Riccall scouts, cubs and beavers; a sing song around the camp fire concluded the evening.
On Saturday, a scouting fun day was opened by the North Yorkshire County Commissioner, Dick Stevenson, and featured many activities for children of all ages, including a climbing wall. The North Yorkshire Scouts new Mobile Display Unit was in use for only the second time. As well as celebrating present day scouting, the fun day gave a glimpse of scouting in the past with displays of equipment, uniforms and hands-on activities. The day was rounded off with a fund-raising disco in the evening. Both events were at the Regen Centre.
On Sunday an open-air service on the Millenium Green had a scouting theme. Prayers were said for the scout movement locally and nationally and the beavers, cubs, scouts and leaders present were invited to renew their scout promises. The carnival was rounded off with a musical picnic on the village green.
