Traffic Issues - Update 5 August......... |
|
Despite pressure from the Council, NYCC move very slowly in implementing traffic measures In the village that have already been agreed. However, we are assured that work on the Northfield Lane/York Road/Main Street junction will be carried out this summer. We are assured, also, that consultation with regard to waiting restrictions in the vicinity of the traffic lights is imminent! We are still pressing for 30mph roundels at the north and south entrances to the village. Larger 30mph signs have been erected on the Kelfield Road entrance to the village. |

A speed and usage survey is to be carried out in Silver Street by NYCC as part of current discussions on traffic management in the northern part of Silver Street. A similar survey is to be carried out in Church Street and Landing Lane, following the Council's request that this should be a 20mph area because of the heavy traffic that uses it and the amount of children that go up and down to the Regen Centre. 20mph limits can only be imposed where they are self-enforcing. This could mean the introduction of traffic calming measures. Funds for these are normally only awarded by NYCC to those locations which have a record of personal injury accidents. |

The Highways Agency has confirmed that its agent, Halcrow, has been asked to design a scheme for a roundabout at the southern junction of the A 19 with the village. A roundabout is expected to enhance safety and accessibility from Riccall, at the expense of delaying through traffic on the A19. When this design work is completed, it will enable the Highways, Agency and NYCC to bid for funds in the future. If these bids are successful, NYCC will be able to take the scheme forward after the A 19 is de-trunked in April 2003. Work in respect of interim measures at both junctions of the A19 with the village is in hand and will be implemented in the autumn. This will involve, at the southern junction, an enhanced right turn facility for southbound vehicles and hatching in the centre of the A 19. Red markings in the! road, alterations to the warning signs and to carriageway markings are also proposed. At the northern junction with the A 19, red surfacing and alterations to signs would be intended to make drivers more aware of the presence of the junction. |
