The nature of development in the village, especially since the 1960s, could lead a casual observer to think that Riccall has no particular character. The great variety of building styles using many different materials seems unrelated; however, when viewed collectively, these help to create the underlying character of the village. |

Developers need to take account of traditional or vernacular materials used in the vicinity, and choose those which are common to or complement, the location, size and style of any proposed development or conversion. Many features originating on older properties can be incorporated by developers into the design of new properties. Houseowners wishing to extend, convert, renovate or modernise their homes, should be encouraged to use local detailing and adopt a sympathetic and cohesive approach in relation to their existing house and neighbouring village properties. |
