Village Design Statement

Trees

Although many fine trees have been lost through disease or wanton removal, the treescape in Riccall, particularly in the built area, remains an important feature in a mainly flat landscape.

Healthy trees should have Protection Orders, especially those which form avenues or lines, or give distinction to areas of the village. In new developments, planting of the appropriate native species helps to merge old with new and enhances the environment.

Recommendations:

Trees define boundaries, create landscape features in the village, and must be protected.

All developments should retain existing healthy trees and include new plantings.

Preservation of existing hedgerows will be a priority and new plantings of native species will be encouraged on developments and road boundaries.
