Brickwork |
Most older properties are built in local clamp brick, laid in either English, or English Garden Wall Bond. There are some notable buildings where Flemish Bond is used to great |
effect. Some modern houses feature traditional details to good effect. Rendered and painted finishes in groups of houses give variety to the street scene. |

Recommendations: |
New developments should be required to use a brick type which complements the local style. |
Local detailing, such as expressed string courses at first floor level and dog toothed courses at eaves level, should be encouraged. |
Extensions and alterations should use the brick types of, or a close match to, the original building. |
Arbitrary variation of wall material for effect should be avoided. |
Brickwork to gables should be encouraged, using expressed features or tumble brickwork to provide interest. |
