What is a Village Design Statement? A Village Design Statement (VDS) describes the physical character of a village and highlights the qualities valued by its residents. It is written by local people, enabling local knowledge, views and ideas to be incorporated into planning guidance and to influence change in the village. The aim is to ensure that any new developments take account of the village’s features and setting and enhance its character, rather than detracting from it. They are practical tools capable of influencing decisions affecting design and development in the village. As Supplementary Planning Guidance, their recommendations will be taken into account when planning applications are assessed. Riccall Village Design Statement is one of the first documents of its type in the UK.
Selby District Council has adopted the statement as a development guide. Anyone applying for planning permission must prove they have used the VDS when drawing up plans.
Below are extracts from the document. A full colour version can be obtained from the Clerk for £2. Contact Clerk@RiccallPC.com for further details.
THIS DESIGN STATEMENT aims to… Describe the distinctive character of Riccall and the immediate surrounding countryside. Show how the character can be identified in: i the landscape setting of the village. ii the shape of the village. iii the nature of the buildings. Provide guidance on how villagers wish development to be achieved.
The Statement aims to ensure that future changes reflect what is best in Riccall and has been endorsed by the people of Riccall through a process of exhibitions and surveys. A wide public consultation was carried out in 1998 and again in spring 2001. Subsequently a draft document was made available to a wide range of relevant organisations. It was also the subject of public notices in the local press on 7th and 8th March 2001.
The Statement was adopted as Supplementary Planning Guidance by Selby District Council on 10th July 2001.
Those applying for planning permission for development in the village will have to show that they have taken on board the guidance this Statement contains when drawing up their plans. Back to Riccall VDS Home page
