Memorial Tree for Community Champion

A memorial tree was planted on Riccall Village Green on 31st January 2009 in memory of former Riccall Parish Councillor David Southall, who sadly died in May 2008. The Mountain Ash ‘Rowan’ tree, chosen by the family as one of David’s favourite trees, is accompanied by a plaque.

David had been a Parish Councillor since 1999 and had also been actively involved in the community of Riccall through his huge commitment to the Scouting movement. He became District Commissioner for the Scouts and eventually Deputy County Commissioner. David also really enjoyed helping to organise the Riccall Carnival.

Riccall Parish Council Chairman, Brian Keen said: ‘David was a true friend to me and to the community of Riccall and a very good Councillor. He was very well known and liked and is greatly missed. The Council hopes that this tree will provide a fitting memorial to David’s contribution to Riccall. In its central location, it will be enjoyed by many people for many years to come.’
